What Is Hospice Care?

Hospice care is a comprehensive approach to keeping your loved one comfortable in the final days of his or her life. When a resident becomes seriously ill or has been given a terminal diagnosis, hospice offers a home-like, family-like solution to hospital support. The hospice team may include a doctor, nurses, social services stafff, therapists, counselors, and spiritual advisors. Hospice care includes the following methods of care:

• Assistance from caring volunteers
• Medical services
• Emotional and spiritual support according to the patient’s faith
• Support for family members
• Pain and symptom relief to keep your loved one comfortable
• Care or access to a care member 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Do I Need Hospice Care Services for My Loved One?

While we provide the care your loved one needs throughout their stay at Verrazano, during final days we cannot always provide him with the 24-hour care he or she needs and deserves. We divide our time equally between all residents, but in the last phase of life, a patient needs more attention. We believe that hospice care for your loved one will allow him to remain comfortable in their home at Verrazano, without having to go to a sterile, foreign hospital environment. Hospice feels natural. It will not disrupt the comfort of your family member, and your family and friends can feel at home when visiting.
